Punter Rankings – Week 11

lechler-shaneShane Lechler has been without question the most fantasy-relevant punter of the past decade, with his performance in 2009 standing as one of the finest fantasy seasons of all time at any position. The combination of his long-distance kicking, the Raiders’ atrocious offense (2nd-worst behind only the 1-15 Rams) and the moderate climate in the Bay Area enabled him to outproduce his next-nearest fantasy competitor (the 49ers’ Andy Lee) by nearly 30%. This season, Lechler is plying his trade for the Houston Texans, and while PFF rates him as the NFL’s top punter (+25.8), his fantasy performance has been merely middle of the pack.

The complete implosion of the Texans’ offense should offer reason for some hope down the stretch, but in the short term, Lechler’s status for Sunday’s game against his former team is in serious doubt. Hospitalized for most of the week due to a bad bout of the flu, Lechler might not be in the lineup for the Texans. If that happens, he’ll be replaced on punts by Randy Bullock, while Matt Schaub will take his place holding for field goals and extra points. If you’ve got Lechler and don’t have a back-up, it might be a good time to look on the waiver wire for an alternative. And on the flip side, if you’ve got Bullock and your league credits all players for all actions, his value could spike meaningfully if he punts competently against the Raiders.
