Production factors behind Joe Philbin’s firing

After falling to the Jets 27-14 in London and dropping to 1-3 on the season, the Miami Dolphins have decided to part ways with head coach Joe Philbin.

Philbin was 24-28 during his tenure in Miami, with zero playoff appearances. The Dolphins looked to be a team on the rise this offseason, with quarterback Ryan Tannehill improving, and with the addition of Ndamukong Suh to an already-talented defense. Suh has played up to his potential, and is currently our eighth-ranked defensive tackle, with a +8.4 overall grade.

The inability of Philbin and his staff to coax more out of Tannehill and the offense as a whole could have been the biggest reason for their early-season failures. Tannehill finished with a +9.8 overall grade last year, which ranked 11th out of all quarterbacks. Thus far this year he sits at a paltry -9.6. Sam Monson covered his struggles in a recent post.

Firing coaches during the season has always been met with mixed results. We will discover the Dolphins’ fate within the next six weeks, and things don’t look promising. Miami will get a bye week before traveling to Tennessee, and then playing the Texans at home. The best case scenario has them at 3-3 before a tough three-game road trip, in which they play at New England, at Buffalo, and at Philadelphia.

I gathered more facts from the commenter telling me how to earn 85 bucks an hour than I did from this article.

Seriously though, you said factors, as in plural, and then said one player has under performed.

PFT has more of want you want regarding stuff like this, PFF is a film grading site

Best ever was Pro Football Weekly …Almost cried when the quit their great weekly publication year before last.. Joel Buchsbaum was my favorite all-time NFL Scout …And they always had a great NFL draft issues years before the NFL draft became so popular on TV ..And NFL Draft Preview was the holly grail of GM’s and NFL Scouts …

        • https://twitter.com/MALACHiOFCOURSE Malachi

yea, ain’t that the truth. they clinged on to a dying format so long tho, by the time they were ready to embrace the net it had left them behind

          • CoryC

I wasn’t looking for gossip, just actual factors. Perhaps that the linebackers have struggled more than last year, or the replacement guards have been even more abymysal than expected. Grading stuff. All I got was “Tannehill has been bad this season”. I can tell that by watching haha.

            those guards tho, yikes, lol

Know what ya mean ..Lot of periodicals went to the internet years before PFW did ..One of the 1st ones was US News & World Report a.. The price of paper and ink went thru the roof and of course they had to pay postage which went up every year ….

        • Tim Edell

          Joel was the best!!!!

          • Backinmd

Remember one year — think it was in the early 1980’s , Joel picked every team’s draft pick in the 1st round of the NFL .He was 32 for 32 .. 100 % correct …. He was on the show only one year ..And his note pad at the back of the magazine was unbelievable ..Like who was the best OL coach in the NFL this year ..Who’s the strongest NFL QB playing now — physically, not arm strength, this year ? .Answer was Jeff Hostetller ..Guess a few football fans thought some of it might be trivial but I remember everything he said AND kept most all of PFW issues for years ..If my memory would have been as good in HS, I would have got straight A’s .he he — One more quote from his notepad about Bob Lilly years after he retired :; Lilly could barley bench press his weight but could stuff OT and Guards who could bench press 450-500 lbs ….

My brother still has every draft preview magazine going back to the late 70s from PFW, incredible to still read. They said Joel lived in tiny apartment with his mom and barely ever left the house. But when he passed away many NfL people were at the funeral including Bill Belicheck

          • Backinmd

Belicheck gave a moving , laudatory speech @ Bushbaum’s funeral ..Had a clip of it on TV ..Had tears in my eyes ..I, too, have most all of PFW issue’s dating back to the seventies ..Brother-in-law – in Philly- had the 1st issue going back to , I think, 1968 ..Didn’t know about PRW then .. Asked him what is PFW and he told me it was the ” Holy Grail” of the NFL .He was right .. Used to read it cover-to-cover each week & everything i read just CLICKED inside my head and remember most all of the scouting reports word for word and the ” ” “Audibles” section on the last page ..Hope so but I don’t think there will never be another Bushbaum …Still miss his great articles, observation’s I used to read every week during the NFL season .. He lived in Brooklyn in a small apt..and kept a low profile for years …

I don’t think too many are surprised by the news. The Dolphins were expected to take a run at the Patriots this season but have been a major disappointment. I’m guessing that Gruden of the Redskins is the guy who inherits the hot seat now that Joe is history.

    • Backinmd

Right – Gruden is in the hot seat ..Plus you always have ” The Danny ” looking over his shoulder .. Twenty, thirty years ago no reputable HC or assistant coach would take the head coaching job if that team had a QB problem ..Now the $ is so good for a head coach to start that none turn it down .. I don’t blame them one bit ..Who in the heck is going to turn down $ 3 , $4 million a year to start ..Is he worth it ? ..Doesn’t look like it so far but stay tuned …

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.willie.509 Joe Willie

Bad owner hired Mike Tannenbaum also –up to his old Jet tricks signing a 100 million $ malcontent DL and resigning a bad QB in competition with nobody to pay him a lot of $–LOL

    • Backinmd

At least the Dolphins didn’t sign Albert Hainsworth to a $100 million dollar contract as the Redskins did a few years back ..Most of the best NFL teams get that way from the yearly Draft ,not signing overpriced, overrated free agents ..I don’t mean Suh — seems like in the press the past few weeks he became the Dolphin’s whipping boy .. The Fins aren’t scoring many points — that tells me it’s their QB …For every free agent signing the next four don’t work out ..Just like MLB ..

Since you no longer offer premium stats perhaps you could cease using those numbers and instead use your 0-100 scale.
