  • Washington Redskins tight end Vernon Davis looks strong in team OTAs last week, beating both linebacker Zach Brown and safety Su'a Cravens deep. Even though it’s still only June, the Redskins will be happy to see that the 33-year-old tight end still has the speed and athleticism to beat defenders that are in their prime.
  • After nine years with the 49ers, in which he amassed 5,640 yards and earned two Pro Bowl nods, Davis was traded to the Denver Broncos in 2015 during their late-season push that ended with winning the Super Bowl. Despite the team success, he capped off an otherwise disappointing year with an overall grade of 56.6, and his 1.14 yards per route run ranked 57th of 111 tight ends.
  • Davis signed a one-year prove-it deal with the Redskins in March 2016. In 16 games Davis caught 44 passes for 583 yards and two touchdowns. His drop rate of 4.35 was not only the best of his career, but the 10th-lowest of all tight ends with at least 30 targets. His 2.05 yards per route run was the fifth-highest among tight ends. He signed a three-year extension this offseason, and will serve as a perfect safety blanket for the injury-prone Jordan Reed, who was the sixth-highest-graded tight end last season with an overall grade of 84.7.
  • Partnered with Reed, they combine to make one of the best tight end tandems in the league. The two of them played 633 passing snaps and amassed 1,267 yards between them, the highest mark of all tight end partnerships in the league. In 2016, their cumulative effort of 2.0 yards per route run ranked second, behind the former team of Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett of the New England Patriots (2.35).
