- Bills general manager Brandon Beane promised an open quarterback competition when speaking with MMQB’s Peter King.
- With Tyrod Taylor, T.J. Yates, Nathan Peterman and Cardale Jones on the roster, Taylor appears to be the runaway favorite to win the starting gig. Taylor is coming off back-to-back good seasons; in 2016 he ranked 11th among qualified QBs with an 84.6 overall grade, and in 2015, ranked 10th with an 88.5 overall grade.
- Taylor was the seventh-most-pressured QB last season (among 37 qualified QBs), experiencing pressure on 41.0 percent of his dropbacks. He handled it well, though, as he also ranked seventh among QBs with an 80.1 passer rating while under pressure.
- The Bills will likely want Taylor to get rid of the ball more quickly in the future. His average time to attempt last season of 2.97 seconds was by far the longest in the NFL, 0.23 seconds longer than Jameis Winston, who clocked in as the second-slowest QB in terms of average time to attempt.
- A healthy Sammy Watkins can go a long way to Taylor having an even better season in 2017. Watkins missed much of 2016 due to injury, but in 2015, finished third among 85 qualifying receivers with a WR rating of 128.8 (QB rating when a receiver is thrown at).
