RB Matt Asiata agrees to deal with Lions

  • The Detroit Lions have signed former Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata. Asiata worked out for Detroit earlier this month following the draft and will likely be in competition with Dwayne Washington for a roster spot.
  • Asiata, who turns 30 before the season starts, spent five years in Minnesota. He was used often in pass protection – pass-blocking on 45 percent of passing downs (257 total pass-block snaps).
  • In 2016, Asiata graded as the 47th-best running back in pass protection at 54.3. His pass-blocking efficiency ranked 49th out of 62 eligible running backs. He surrendered 9 total pressures on 73 pass-block snaps.
  • Asiata, considered a short yardage back, ranked 29th out of 53 RBs (min. 83 carries) in short-yardage success rate at 57 percent.
