Patriots host free agent LB Andrew Gachkar

  • Earlier this week the New England Patriots visited with free agent linebacker Andrew Gachkar. Gachkar has been a rotational linebacker throughout his career and he carved out a large special-teams role for himself as a member of the Dallas Cowboys in 2016.
  • The former seventh-round pick saw his most action in 2014, when he played for the (then) San Diego Chargers. He finished that season ranked 49th out of 93 qualifying linebackers with a 69.4 overall grade over 395 snaps. The most defensive snaps Gachkar has seen outside of that season were 171 in 2013.
  • During the 2016 season, Gachkar saw 327 snaps across five different special-teams units. Gachkar accumulated one tackle and two assists on those 327 snaps while grading out right at league average.
  • In addition to being capable of wearing multiple hats on special teams, Gachkar did flash some upside on defense in 2016, albeit from a limited sample size. Gachkar was only asked to rush the quarterback four times last season (on 45 passing down snaps) but was still able to tally a sack; and on 26 run defense snaps he had three stops to go with an assist. Gachkar also didn’t miss a tackle on defense.
