Packers think UDFA Taysom Hill “belongs” in quarterback competition

  • When asked about the performance of undrafted rookie free agent QB Taysom Hill at the Green Bay Packers’ rookie minicamp, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that “he belongs” in the team’s competition for a backup quarterback spot.
  • The 26-year-old rookie quarterback went undrafted after an up-and-down final year at BYU that ended with his fourth season-ending injury of his college career, earning a 71.7 overall grade.
  • Still, Hill offers an intriguing skill set that brought him to Green Bay and earned the approval of his head coach after his first set of practices.
  • Last season, Hill was under pressure on 37.5 percent of his dropbacks, the ninth most in the country, and he threw eight touchdowns against only one interception on those plays.
  • He also used his legs effectively to extend plays, finishing 2016 with the third highest average time to throw among quarterbacks in the draft at 2.91 seconds.
  • The Packers found an undrafted quarterback they liked last year, and now Hill will do his best to be this year’s Joe Callahan in Green Bay.
