ATL-PHI grades: Eagles rushing attack paves way for win

Quarterback grade: Carson Wentz, 74.5

Wentz overcomes rookie mistakes

Wentz had some rookie mistakes like a mismanagement of the clock at the end of the first half, giving the Falcons an extra play to take a shot at the end zone, but he did enough to help the Eagles win. Wentz was highly effective throwing outside the numbers to his right as he completed 12 of 13 passes targeted to that area. Wentz only completed two of four passes targeted to his left outside the numbers.

Eagles rushing attack paves the way for the win

Jason Peters had a great game against the Falcons. Peters did not allow a single hit or hurry on Carson Wentz in 41 pass blocking snaps. Peters also had a 80.1 run blocking grade. Ryan Mathews provided a spark for the Eagles’ offense by generating 39 yards after contact, forcing one missed tackle and scoring two TDs. Jordan Matthews caught six of 10 targets and provided 20 yards after the catch.

Eagles defense frustrates Falcons 

Linebacker Mychal Kendricks graded positively as a run-defender, pass-rusher and in coverage. Kendrick's had one run stop, one QB hurry and only allowed one catch for five yards. Malcolm Jenkins was targeted five times but only allowed four catches for 32 yards. Fletcher Cox provided six QB hurries on 31 pass rush snaps.

Quarterback grade: Matt Ryan, 77.4

Ryan struggles to connect

Matt Ryan did not have a very accurate performance against the Eagles. Ryan only completed five of 13 passes targeted 10 or more yards downfield. Ryan’s receivers also dropped five passes in a sluggish performance. Ryan did perform well when under pressure, throwing his TD and earning a 120.4 QB rating when under duress.

Falcons’ offense struggles to score

Jake Matthews was the Falcons’ best pass protector and only allowed one hit on quarterback Matt Ryan on 37 pass block snaps. Julio Jones was targeted 16 times against the Eagles he caught 10 of them and added 35 yards after the catch but he also had two drops. Taylor Gabriel had 43 yards after the catch on his touchdown reception.

Beasley and other young defenders played well

Vic Beasley continues to play like one of the better young pass-rushers in the NFL. Against the Eagles Beasley added two sacks on his 29 pass rush snaps and he also added two run stops. Grady Jarrett provided three hurries on 19 pass rushes and also provided two run stops. De’Vondre Campbell didn’t allow a catch on two targets and also added a QB hurry.
