Mike Gillislee favored to be the Patriots starting back

  • According to the Boston Globe, it appears that New England Patriots running back Mike Gillislee is the favorite to win the team’s starting job.
  • Gillislee had a breakout year in 2016 backing up Bills running back LeSean McCoy. He graded as the 14th-best running back out of 62 with an overall grade of 76.4. He played a career-high 285 snaps.
  • On a per snap basis, Gillislee was one of the most elusive running backs in the NFL, earning the eighth-best elusive rating at 57.6. He was especially good creating extra yards, producing 3.34 yards after contact per carry, the third-highest average among running backs.
  • Gillislee was ranked third in breakaway percentage at 43.3 percent (percentage of yards that come on carries of 15 yards or more). 10 percent of his carries went for 15 yards or more.
