Green Bay envisions Jones filling Hyde’s role

  • In an interview on Packers.com, Mike McCarthy compared Green Bay fourth-round pick Josh Jones to his recently departed free agent defensive back Micah Hyde as players who can play multiple positions in the secondary.
  • In 2016, Green Bay had to use Hyde primarily as a slot cornerback, but in previous years, he had a much more varied role, moving around the secondary playing both deep safety and up in the box.
  • Jones was used similarly at NC State this past year, lining up at both safety positions and at both outside and slot cornerback. He allowed a passer rating of only 50.0 against him in coverage for no touchdowns to go with three interceptions and six pass breakups.
  • Looking at snap distributions, it’s easy to see how McCarthy envisions Jones filling Hyde’s shoes in Green Bay.

Boyd has the attributes of Hyde but is faster. The big unknown is Boyd’s “instincts”. Hyde didn’t win Big Ten defensive player of the year by accident. Those skills transformed to the NFL.
