Gilmore brings big expectations with him to New England

  • Like Darrelle Revis and Aqib Talib before him, expectations are high for new Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who became one of the highest-paid players at his position this offseason.
  • Gilmore, however, doesn’t appear too worried, telling local media, “There’s only pressure if you make it. You just go out and work hard and do your job and rely on each other, trust each other. If we do that, I think we’ll be good.”
  • One of those players Gilmore will be relying on is fellow standout cornerback Malcolm Butler. The two players combined to get their hands on 27 passes (9 interceptions, 18 passes defensed) in 2016, giving the Patriots a great chance to create positive plays for their defense in the secondary.
  • Both Gilmore and Butler ranked in the top 10 among cornerbacks in PFF’s Playmaker Index, which measures how often a player records either an interception or pass breakup when targeted in coverage.

Gilmore is going to return one for a TD against his old team this season and the Bills on the sidelines will be saying “Hey, didn’t that guy use to be with us?”

it’d be worth going through gilmore’s interceptions and passes defensed to look at how many of them were catchable balls. i remember most of his INTs being lame ducks that weren’t close to a receiver being able to make a play on them.
