The right tackle tore both his patellar tendons in October. It would be a surprise if he makes it back at all in 2017.

Derek Newton hits reserve/PUP; expected to miss 2017

  • The Texans placed right tackle Derek Newton on the reserve/PUP list Saturday. He is expected to miss the entire 2017 season after tearing both of his patellar tendons in October 2016.
  • Newton has played 4,473 snaps over the past five seasons, the second-most by a Houston Texan over that span behind only LT Duane Brown.
  • Over that time, Newton has slowly become one of the better tackles in the league, as he graded out above 80.0 in both 2014 and 2015. On top of that, he was PFF’s highest-graded right tackle in run blocking in 2014.
  • Newton made strides in pass-blocking too, as he was tied for 23rd in pass-blocking efficiency in 2015, his last full season. In that year he allowed five sacks, four hits, and 21 hurries on 508 pass-blocking snaps.
  • The Texans will most likely start veteran Chris Clark at right tackle at least early in the season. He earned a grade of 37.0 in 2016 and was PFF’s 73rd-ranked tackle out of 78 qualifying players.
