Chiefs CB Terrance Mitchell ready for opportunity

  • Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Terrance Mitchell told the media Thursday that he “always knew I could play, I just had to wait for an opportunity.”
  • Opportunity has been hard to come by for Mitchell, who was let go by Dallas, Chicago, Houston, and the Chiefs before re-signing with the Chiefs in November and playing a key role the AFC West Division champions down the stretch.
  • Playing right cornerback in Kansas City’s subpackages, Mitchell played 295 snaps, allowing just a 55.5 passer rating into his coverage, defending five passes while allowing only 42.9 percent completion during that stretch.
  • Some of his best performances came against some bona fide NFL wide receivers, including Amari Cooper (just 24 yards against on five targets), Demaryius Thomas (14 yards on four targets), and Antonio Brown (zero yards on two targets).
  • It appears Mitchell will get the first crack at the right cornerback spot in the Chiefs’ nickel, and given that they play five or more defensive backs about three-quarters of the time, the stakes are high for Mitchell the next few months.
