Browns may move new secondary member McCourty to safety


  • After signing Jason McCourty, the Cleveland Browns may look to have him play some safety. McCourty will likely play multiple positions and must draw on his strengths in multiple types of coverage.
  • Browns new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams ran multiple defensive looks in 2016. The Rams ran cover-1 25.20 percent of the time, cover-2, 24.24 percent and cover-3 29.37 percent.
  • McCourty was best in man coverage last year. On the season, he allowed 35 completions on 63 targets, giving up 475 yards, two touchdowns and 3.26 yards after catch. He also added two interceptions and four passes defensed and quarterbacks had a rating of 77.1 when targeting him in man coverage.
  • While McCourty was better in man coverage, he allowed fewer yards after catch on average in zone coverage, giving up just 2.5 yards per reception. On a whole, he was targeted 33 times, giving up 22 completions for 228 yards and a touchdown with a passing rating against of 96.5 in zone. He added in three passes defensed, but had no interceptions while in zone coverage.
