5 things you need to know for Monday

Good morning football fans! Here are the five things you need to know coming out of Sunday to get your morning started right:

  1. Houston Texans cornerback and former first-round pick Kevin Johnson figures to be a full-go by training camp. The Texans need Johnson now more than they did a year ago when A.J. Bouye was able to take advantage of the opportunity when Johnson went down hurt. Bouye has left for Jacksonville, leaving a chance for Johnson to show the continued improvement we briefly saw from years one to two.
  2. The Dallas Cowboys have added a lot of talent to their secondary, but still have no clear starter at one cornerback spot, opening up a battle that will play out over training camp. Chidobe Awuzie fits the mold of outside cornerback more from a body type standpoint, but was far more productive inside than out in college, while Jourdan Lewis was able to consistently outperform his size on the perimeter in college.
  3. The Kansas City Chiefs added a big body to the offensive line in undrafted free agent Damien Mama out of USC. Mama checked in at the combine at 334 pounds, and believe it or not, that represents a new, slimmed-down version of a player who arrived on campus three pounds shy of tipping the scales at 400 as a freshman. Mama has shown the ability to be a good run-blocker and pass protector over his college career, but not both at the same time. He does represent an intriguing add for a Chiefs line in need of depth though.
  4. The Detroit Lions signed undrafted CB Des Lawrence out of the University of North Carolina. Lawrence has been an effective corner over the past couple of seasons in college and particularly impressive in coverage, so has a chance to stick on a roster that isn’t overwhelmed with quality coverage guys.
  5. A handful of the PFF Fantasy writers got together to answer a simple question: Which rookies are fantasy starters right away? They weighed in on the top-drafted running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends to see who would be worth a starter draft pick right from the start.
