49ers add UDFA pass rusher Jimmie Gilbert

  • The San Francisco 49ers awarded former University of Colorado edge rusher Jimmie Gilbert a team-high guarantee of $62,000 to sign as an undrafted free agent.
  • Gilbert is a 6-foot-4, 231 pound edge rusher that earned second team All-Pac-12 honors from PFF in 2016.
  • He graded out above average as a pass rusher, against the run and in coverage.
  • A combine snub, Gilbert matches up well athletically when compared to other edge defenders. His pro day numbers would have ranked top-10 at the combine in the 40-yard dash (4.68), vertical jump (37 inches) and broad jump (10-feet even). Gilbert’s 12 bench press reps, though, would have been worst in the edge class.

Jimmie Gilbert grades

  • Sam Bernard

    12 reps wtf?!?

    • Raul Fender

He isn’t going to move Tackles with that bench result.

    • Brian Grasberger

Meh… 6 months training could get him to 20 reps

Agreed, the kid has potential, btw Colorado really turned that program around. Gilbert is just one of several players that were either drafted or signed as a undrafted free agent.

The 49ers didn’t sign OLB Jimmy Gilbert because he is a finished product, its all about projecting what Gilbert will be able to contribute after getting him with a pro strength and conditioning coach. GM John Lynch is actually doing an outstanding job of adding talent to their roster. With some added strength, muscle mass, Gilbert could turn out to be a steal. Gilbert actually reminds me alot of DE Cliff Avril, who was drafted by Detroit in the 3rd round. Coming out of Purdue, Avril was considered undersized and much like Gilbert needed to add weight, muscle mass and strength. With the 49ers switching to Seattles 4-3, cover 3 scheme, Gilbert could end up filling that same type of role down the line. As a former D1 college football player, i can tell you that bench pressing 225lbs isn’t easy as it looks bro.
