Anything over a +8.5 grade for this position will get the recognition it deserves!
1. Tom Brady, 2011 – WK1, NE @ MIA: +13.2
Passing: +13.1, Rushing: -0.1, Penalty: +0.2
In a wild start to the 2011 season on Monday Night Football, Brady put forth a remarkable display that saw him end with 517 yards and four touchdowns as the Patriots asked him to throw an arm-deadening 48 times. That he was able to deliver time and time again, while challenging Miami all over the field is testament to his performance.
2. Ben Roethlisberger, 2014 – WK8, IND @ PIT: +10.7
Passing: +11.1, Rushing: -0.1, Penalty: -0.3
Roethlisberger carried his Steelers to victory with a gargantuan effort against the Colts. Throwing 522 yards and six touchdowns, this was a masterclass in making big time throws as Big Ben completed 81.6% of his passes (with a staggering adjusted accuracy percentage of 89.6%. Some showing.
=3. Aaron Rodgers, 2011 – WK13, GB @ NYG: +9.6
Passing: +8.5, Rushing: +0.9, Penalty: +0.2
Rodgers capped off a fantastic performance by leading a game-winning drive that he made look ridiculously easy. A good day all around when throwing for 369 yards and four touchdowns while his receivers dropped seven passes.
=3. Philip Rivers, 2011 – WK17, SD @ OAK: +9.6
Passing: +9.0, Rushing: 0.0, Penalty: +0.1
Rivers ended a disappointing 2011 with a fine display, even managing to get out and earn a positive grade for his run blocking on an end around. But it was his passing that gets him this recognition, completing 19-of-26 for 310 yards despite two drops and two throwaways.
=5. Aaron Rodgers, 2010 – WK9, DAL @ GB: +9.5
Passing: +8.5, Rushing: +0.9, Penalty: +0.1
When the Packers were busying destroying the Cowboys, it was Aaron Rodgers who was orchestrating everything with a virtuoso display. Completing 79.4% of passes (despite three drops) Rodgers walked away with three touchdowns and a 132.1 QB rating in a sign of things to come that year.
=5. Drew Brees, 2010 – WK12, NO @ DAL: +9.5
Passing: +9.4, Rushing: 0.0, Penalty: +0.1
Brees celebrated Thanksgiving in style, leading a memorable comeback to ensure a big New Orleans win. While his one touchdown, one pick and 59% completion percentage didn’t wow anyone, the manner of Brees' performance certainly did.
=7. Carson Palmer, 2009 – WK7, CHI @ CIN: +9.2
Passing: +9.1, Rushing: 0.0, Penalty: +0.1
Palmer threw only 24 times against the Bears, but in completing 20 of those for 233 yards and five touchdowns, he had what will go down as one of the best games of his career. You won’t find many single better adjusted accuracy percentage marks than the 91.3% he managed.
=7. Drew Brees, 2011 – WK15, NO @ MIN: +9.0
Passing: +8.6, Rushing: +0.2, Penalty: +0.2
Quarterbacking never looked so easy. With five touchdowns and completing 80% of his 40 attempts for 412 yards, Brees was almost surgical in his dissection of the Vikings in his highest graded performance of the 2011 season.
9. Aaron Rodgers, 2010 – SB, PIT @ GB: +9.0
Passing: +8.9, Rushing: 0.0, Penalty: +0.1
When his team needed him in the biggest game of his life, Rodgers duly delivered. With an adjusted accuracy percentage of 78.9% he was ruthless in exposing an overmatched Steelers outfit on his way to earning a Super Bowl MVP.
10. Matt Ryan, 2008 –WK6 CHI @ ATL: +8.8
Passing: +8.8, Rushing: -0.1, Penalty: +0.1
The rookie Ryan was near flawless in leading his team to a dramatic victory, completing 73.3% of attempted passes, including a memorable one to Michael Jenkins that put them in position for an unlikely victory.
11. Tony Romo, 2013 -WK5, DEN @ DAL: +8.7
But for a crucial late pick this would have been even higher as Romo produced the finest performance of his career. He was ruthless in attacking downfield and this was one game where the 506 yards and five touchdowns truly did justice to his performance.
12. Aaron Rodgers, 2012 – WK6, GB @ HST: +8.6
Passing: +7.4, Rushing: +1.1, Penalty: +0.1
When some were starting to doubt, Rodgers used a national television audience to show everyone he still had the goods. His 342-yard, six-touchdown display led his team to an emphatic victory, with all of his touchdowns coming on deep passes.
