PFF Preview: Jets @ Dolphins, Week 17

2014-Prev-WK17-NYJ@MIAWeek 17 features a battle between AFC East Rivals as the 3-12 New York Jets travel to Miami to face off against the 8-7 Dolphins.

Miami’s defense will look to put as much pressure as possible on Jets quarterback Geno Smith to disrupt his rhythm. Defensive end Cameron Wake leads his position with a +34.3 pass rush grade in 2014, while ranking third in Pass Rush Productivity (12.0). Defensive tackle Jared Odrick has been impressive rushing the passer as well. The Penn State alum ranks fourth at his position with nine quarterback hits and 13th with a +8.6 pass rush grade.

Meanwhile, the Jets’ offensive line will look to hold Miami’s aggressive front four in check in their season finale. It might be a tall task without starting center Nick Mangold, though, who suffered a high ankle sprain last week. Left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson has only allowed one sack in 585 pass blocking snaps, so a matchup with Wake will be an interesting one to watch. Offensive guard Willie Colon has struggled in the running game, but has a solid +5.7 pass blocking grade this season. Geno Smith must be well protected if the Jets are going to pull off the upset on Sunday afternoon.

Here are three more notable numbers for each side:

New York Jets

Muhammad Wilkerson – his 10.9 Run Stop Percentage is the second-best mark among 3-4 defensive ends in the league this season.

Chris Ivory – has forced 52 missed tackles in the running game in 2014, while ranking third among running backs with a 69.4 Elusive Rating.

Sheldon Richardson – the second-year end ranks inside the Top 5 at his position in terms of Pass Rush Productivity (8.9) and total pressures (47), while ranking first with a +19.2 grade against the run.

Miami Dolphins

Ryan Tannehill – ranks fourth among quarterbacks with a 76.3 adjusted Accuracy Percentage this season.

Reshad Jones  leads all safeties with a 15.3 Run Stop Percentage in 2014, amassing 15 stops while not missing a tackle in run defense.

Jelani Jenkins – the linebacker ranks fifth at his position with 11.2 Coverage Snaps per Reception and sixth with 33 stops against the run.
