PFF Preview: Chargers @ 49ers, Week 16

2014-Prev-WK16-SD@SFThe (8-6) San Diego Chargers try to keep their playoff hopes alive as they head north to Levi’s Stadium on Sunday to play the (7-7) San Francisco 49ers. The Chargers have lost two straight games after their last-second win against Baltimore in Week 13. The 49ers have dropped three straight after losing in Seattle 17-7 last week.

The 49ers Joe Staley is playing as well as any tackle in football right now. Since Week 10, his overall grade stands at +16.2 making him the top graded tackle over that time. His pass blocking has seen the biggest improvement as his Pass Block Efficiency rating of 97.8 ranks fifth during this recent hot streak. This week his challenge will be slowing down the veteran Dwight Freeney. Freeney’s +11.4 pass rushing grade ranks ninth out of all 3-4 outside linebackers. Freeney has 45 total pressures on the year and ranks 11th with a Pass Rush Productivity rating of 10.3.

Here are a few other players to watch for.

San Diego Chargers

Antonio Gates – Gates is still a weapon in the passing games as his +3.5 receiving grade ranks ninth and his Drop Rate of 3.33 ranks fourth among all tight ends.

Eric Weddle – Weddle has the highest-graded safety by a solid margin at +21.2 overall, and he also ranks sixth in Tackling Efficiency at 21.0.

Melvin Ingram – Since his Week 11 return, his +4.0 overall grade ranks 13th out of all 3-4 outside linebackers and his Run Stop Percentage of 7.4% comes in ninth.

San Francisco 49ers

Mike Iupati – His +16.3 run blocking grade ranks second at the guard spot behind only Marshal Yanda and Iupati’s +8.3 overall grade ranks 14th.

Aldon Smith – Smith’s +7.0 overall grade since Week 11 ranks sixth out of all 3-4 outside linebackers, and his Pass Rush Productivity of 13.5 over that time ranks fourth.

Aaron Lynch – Despite a limited amount of snaps, Lynch still ranks 15th overall in our 3-4 outside linebacker grading with a +7.7 mark, and the rookie also has the sixth highest Pass Rush Productivity rating at 11.3.
