PFF Preview: Broncos @ Jets, Week 6

2014-Prev-WK06-DEN@NYJThe New York Jets (1-4) are on a four-game losing streak following an opening day win against the Oakland Raiders, and their schedule doesn’t get any easier this week as they host the Denver Broncos (3-1) at Met Life Stadium.

The Broncos have struggled to run the ball so far this year, and other than left guard Orlando Franklin, the offensive line has struggled to run block as well. When asked to do so, Chris Clark (-5.6), Ryan Clady (-4.6), and Louis Vasquez (-1.7) have all had their troubles. In contrast, four of the five starting offensive linemen have graded well as pass blockers with only Manuel Ramirez posting a grade below +1.0 so far. Ramirez has allowed seven QB hurries, but did not give up any of the three sacks of Peyton Manning this year.

The strength of the Jets' defense has been their defensive line. Muhammad Wilkerson leads the group and ranks second in the league for 3-4 defensive ends overall (+11.7). He has been the best in the league at his position against the run (+8.9), and leads the league in stops with 18. Starters Sheldon Richardson (+3.1) and Damon Harrison (+8.4) along with rotational player Leger Douzable (+3.6) have also enjoyed their time as run defenders. Richardson has also been the team's top pass rusher (+7.2) with three sacks, five hits, and 12 hurries to his name.

That O-line/D-line matchup will be one to keep an eye on. Here are some other notable numbers for this game:

Denver Broncos

Chris Harris Jr. – The Broncos' cornerback has graded out second best in the league in coverage (+7.0), and has allowed the third-fewest yards per coverage snap (0.53).

Terrance Knighton – Knighton is coming off his best game of the season — even though he played in a season-low 26 snaps — excelling in run defense (+1.1) with three stops, which matched his season total.

Demaryius Thomas – Thomas has been a bit up-and-down from week to week this year, but is coming off a big game against the Arizona Cardinals. Eight of his 21 receptions came in Week 5 along with 159 of his 218 yards after catch. Six of Thomas’ receptions came against Antonio Cromartie who had a +4.7 in coverage coming into the matchup.

New York Jets

Demario Davis – Davis has struggled with consistency this season, but most of his troubles have come in coverage. He has been steady in run defense, building up a rating of +3.0 while finishing only one game with a grade below zero in the category.

Calvin Pryor – Similar to Davis, the young safety Pryor has struggled in pass coverage during his rookie season, but has been productive as a run defender (+3.6).

Jace Amaro – Amaro has played just over 33% of the Jets' offensive snaps this season, and even though he hasn’t produced big numbers, he has been a respectable run blocker, finishing each game with a rating above zero and compiling a +1.8 on the year.
