PFF Preview: Bills @ Lions, Week 5

2014-Prev-WK05-BUF@DETThe (2-2) Buffalo Bills and new quarterback Kyle Orton head to Ford Field on Sunday as they match up with the (3-1) Detroit Lions. The Bills are coming off of two straight losses and are hoping Orton can stabilize the Buffalo offense. The Lions have won two straight after beating the Packers at home and the Jets on the road.

For a key matchup here you just have to look up front. The Bills’ right guard Erik Pears has struggled thus far this season. His 93.8 Pass Block Efficiency rating ranks 63rd out of 69 guards and his -12.4 run block grade ranks last at the moment. Things don’t get any easier for him as he will see a lot of Ndamukong Suh on Sunday. Suh’s +6.8 overall grade ranks him sixth out of all defensive tackles and his 10.2 Pass Rushing Productivity rating ranks third.

Here are a few other names to watch out for:

Buffalo Bills

Kyle Williams – The current owner of our highest defensive tackle grade (+12.0), also tops our Pass Rush Productivity rating with an 11.7 mark. His 17 total pressures leads all defensive tackles.

Aaron Williams – Williams is providing balanced play against both the run and the pass. Our fourth-highest-graded safety ranks sixth in coverage (+4.4) and fourth in run grade (+2.6).

Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller – Jackson ranks fifth overall out of all running backs at+4.0 and C.J. Spiller 14th at +1.3. They also rank seventh and ninth in our Yards Per Route Run Signature Stat.

Detroit Lions

Calvin Johnson – Per our wide receiver Deep Passing Signature Stat, Johnson’s 11 deep targets (20+ yards downfield) ranks him second in the league and his catch rate of 45.5% ranks 11th.

Larry Warford – Warford ranked fourth in our guard rankings in 2013 at +24.2. He currently sits at 25th and has struggled a bit in the run game with a -3.8 grade.

DeAndre Levy – Levy has the top run grade of any 4-3 OLB at +6.4 and his 18 stops in the run game also give him our top Run Stop Percentage at 19.6%.

It’s hard to put all the blame on Warford. The RT situation has been brutal and you’re only as good as the guy next to you on the OL.
