Personnel decisions possible sidebar to Marrone, Whaley altercation

PFF-headlinesIt appears there was a bit of an altercation between Bills head coach Doug Marrone and general manager Doug Whaley recently and some are speculating this was down to differing opinions on players (Cyrus Kouandjio, Robert Woods and Kraig Urbik) and the recent acquisition of Kyle Orton.

While it’s fair to say Kouandjio looked anything but NFL ready while giving up 12 QB disruptions and two penalties in 177 preseason snaps. This isn’t unusual for a rookie lineman and many who struggle early improve and go onto far better things (the Bengals 6th overall selection of 2009, right tackle Andre Smith was utterly woeful for two years before turning into one of the better players at his position).

Woods ranked only 77th out of 94 eligible receivers with only 1.21 Yards Per Route Run in 2013 but has played much better this year upping that number to 1.84 in Buffalo’s five practice games.

Kraig Urbik is an interesting case. He was our 8th rated right guard last year but was demoted in the 4th preseason game to allow Seantrel Henderson to play right tackle with Erik Pears kicking inside to take his place. Urbik does struggle with better players on occasion (as he did last year against Gerald McCoy and Randy Starks) but who doesn’t? It's hard to believe Pears will be able to do a better job than Urbik did in 2013.
