Packers will push the pace on Thanksgiving

Welcome to Snaps, Pace, and Stats, which examines trends in snap totals and no-huddle usage. This year I’ll be looking at individual players on Fridays in Advanced Matchup Plays, and it will appear both here and on RotoGrinders. Before that, however, it is helpful to take a 30,000-foot view of the upcoming games, in the hope of finding out which ones will be played on fertile fantasy soil.

N.Y. Giants at Washington

The Giants are running the fifth-most plays over the last month (69.3) and Washington is allowing the third-most (68.7). They were stingy in this area for the first four weeks, surrendering a league-low 53.8 per game, but have since collapsed. Their pass coverage and run defense both rank 26th, and even their pass rush is less effective over the last month (-0.1) than the first four weeks (+22.5). New York scores the fourth-most points per snap (0.42), and Washington allows the sixth-most (0.41). They just gave up 44 points and 75 plays to the up-tempo Panthers, and the Giants run the NFL’s second-most no-huddle-heavy offense.

Washington managed 70 snaps, 21 points, and 316 passing yards against New York back in Week 3. That was without the services of DeSean Jackson, who just burned a far better pass coverage unit in Carolina (+31.3; third-best) for five catches, 87 yards, and a score. The Giants’ coverage (-21.4; 25th-best) is in for a stiffer test from an 18th-ranked passing game, than what their run defense will face in Washington (-1.8 rushing grade; 28th). Both offenses average 3.9 yards per carry and pass on more than 60 percent of their snaps. In what projects to be a close game (Giants favored by two points), both teams should maintain an aggressive stance.
