• Last season was the last year on Joe Flacco‘s contract with the Ravens, and since he happened to be the starting quarterback for their unlikely Super Bowl run, he was then given a ridiculous contract (albeit the going rate.) Basically it is for three years at $62 million, with $52 million guaranteed (after that the cap number goes through the roof and the contract in all likelihood will be redone.)
What was lost in the original reporting of the signing is that GM Ozzie Newsome structured the contract where Flacco's 2013 cap hit would only be for $6.8 million. So after the contract was signed, Newsome did not have to throw anyone else off of the team for cap reasons if he really wanted them. But S Ed Reed was allowed to walk, and now we see why.
