Every Tuesday I will be bringing you the NFL players who have somehow flown under the fantasy radar and are owned in far too few leagues given their production and/or ceiling. Injuries and byes are inevitable, too.
With the first game of the week a mere 48 hours away, here are some players that are on quite a few waiver wires out there that simply shouldn’t be.
Quarterback
Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins (Yahoo 25% owned; ESPN 14.5%) – 7% FAAB
Fantasy football is as much a game about opportunity as it is skill. The talent is developing and the usage is beginning to look more like that of a quarterback you can win with. After attempting more than 40 passes just once in his first eight games, the second year pro has done so in three of his last four games (completing at least 64.3% of his passes in all three instances).
Mike Wallace is getting more involved (9.6 targets per game after a slow September that saw him average seven targets) and Brain Hartline has seen at least 13 targets twice in the last three weeks, increasing his yardage output in five straight weeks (peaking at 127 yards last week). With two home games in the final three weeks of the season, weather isn’t likely to limit Tannehill’s numbers.
Brandon Weeden, Cleveland Browns (Yahoo 4% owned; ESPN 1.8%) – 3% FAAB
He is recovering from a concussion, so his short term status is up in the air, but the Browns seem to be committed to throwing the ball (no team, not one, has attempted more passes this season) and thus provide whoever lines up under center with reasonable upside. Josh Gordon has accounted for 499 yards over the last two weeks as he looks to establish himself as an elite receiving option, and with secondary players like Jordan Cameron/Greg Little/Davone Bess, there are fantasy points to be had.
It’s obvious that Cleveland doesn’t have a running back on their roster that they trust, and with two explosive offenses on the upcoming schedule, I’m not shying away from the Browns starter.
