If you’ve never played weekly salary cap games, you’re missing out on an exciting game to play throughout the NFL season. The game that we’ll be breaking down in this weekly article is for the website FanDuel.
For those of you that have never played a salary cap game before, I’ll quickly go over the rules so you can understand how these games work. Each player is given a monetary value based on statistics, matchups and that player’s hype. You then try to create the ideal lineup using as salary cap, such as $60,000.
The purpose of this weekly article is to point out the best values each week so you can make the most ideal lineup. A few positions you’ll never see on this article is defenses and kickers. With these positions you’re just basically looking for the most ideal matchup, whether that’s a rookie quarterback for a defense or a terrible defense for a kicker.
With all this information, let’s now take a look at some of the most ideal matchups over at FanDuel.

Quarterback
Matt Flynn, Oakland Raiders
Before we go any further, the only reason that you would start Flynn is if Terrelle Pryor isn’t starting due to his concussion suffered in Week 3. If Pryor is starting, forget everything I’m about to say. However, if Pryor is out, Flynn becomes an incredible value at a cost of only $5,000.
The reason for this is the fact that the Raiders play the Washington Redskins in Week 4. That’s the same Washington Redskins that have a -52.3 overall defensive grade this season, nearly twice as bad as the second-worst graded team in the league.
The Redskins pass coverage is also the graded as the worst in the league. Simply put, even a backup quarterback like Flynn should be able to torch such a putrid defense like the one in Washington. Keep an eye on the injury reports coming out of Oakland, but if Flynn is playing, he is a smart value play.
Running Backs
Danny Woodhead, San Diego Chargers
There are two reasons that Woodhead is such a great value pickup for Week 4. The first reason revolves around the fact that starting running back Ryan Mathews is as injury prone as they come. Now you can never predict an injury, but Mathews is at risk each and every week to get knocked out of the game.
Secondly, Woodhead has carved out a rather solid niche for himself in the Chargers offense. Last week he totaled 86 yards on 12 total touches. Woodhead has become the preferred receiver out of the backfield, which only adds to his fantasy value.
Look for Woodhead to get another 10-15 touches this week and put up solid numbers across the board.
Andre Ellington, Arizona Cardinals
At only a cost of $4,500 this week, Ellington might have the most value of any player over at FanDuel. Yes, Ellington’s only managed to get 13 total touches on the season, but those touches have come in the past two weeks and have combined for a whopping 130 yards and a touchdown.
The Cardinals desperately need a boost in their backfield and Ellington’s ability to impact the game in a handful of ways makes him a legitimate contender to be that player. Furthermore, Ellington’s graded out extremely well when he’s been on the field. His overall grade of 2.3 is good enough for the 13th-best in the league.
With a matchup against the extremely pedestrian defense of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week, don’t be surprising if Ellington has the best game of his young career.
Wide Receivers
Ryan Broyles, Detroit Lions
An unfortunate injury to starting receiver Nate Burleson is going to push Broyles into the spotlight for the next few weeks. Broyles played his first game of the season last week and finished the game with three receptions and 34 yards.
While those aren’t spectacular numbers, his increased role due to Burleson’s injury will make him much more valuable in Week 4. At a cost of only $5,000, Broyles’ cost is simply too good to pass up, even with the slight risk.
Nate Washington, Tennessee Titans
Can you guess which receiver is currently grading out as the fifth-best receiver in the league? Well, if you guessed Washington, you’d have guessed right.
Washington has become the go-to receiver for Titans’ quarterback Jake Locker. He currently has a wide receiver rating of 111.9, good enough for the 15th-best in the league. Washington is also averaging 2.39 yards per route run, the 10th-best number for a receiver.
With starting wide receiver Kenny Britt continuing to see his role diminish in Tennessee, Washington will only see more and more balls thrown his way. His cost at FanDuel of only $5,200 is ridiculously low and a fantastic value.
Tight End
Coby Fleener, Indianapolis Colts
The fact that Fleener only has a cost of $5,500 this week at FanDuel is simply ridiculous. Not only is Fleener establishing himself as a top tight end in the league, but he has an ideal matchup for this week.
Fleener is currently grading out as the ninth-best tight end in the league with a grade of 1.9. However, with a matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars and their second-worst defense in the league, Fleener should be in for a big game.
Last week the Jaguars gave up two touchdowns to tight end Zach Miller of the Seattle Seahawks. Look for Fleener to have similar success this week.
