The IDP Breakdown - Week 3 Edition

NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers at Kansas City ChiefsKansas City @ Philadelphia

The Chiefs enter Thursday night’s contest a somewhat surprising 2-0 and all eyes will obviously be on Andy Reid. While Reid has certainly breathed new life into the Kansas City offense, their defense has also seem to be reinvigorated in 2013. They currently rank as the No. 3 overall defense in the league statistically speaking. You’re obviously starting your studs in this one – Derrick Johnson, Eric Berry, and Justin Houston, but what about Dontari Poe? The former first-rounder has exploded for 3.5 sacks in the first two games. While some are already pegging him the breakout defensive player of the year, I think he’s more the IDP equivalent of Eddie Royal. Poe has converted four of his five QB pressures (sum of sacks, hits, and hurries) for sacks. A conversion rate of 80 percent is completely unsustainable. The league average is right around 17 percent, so look for significant regression out of Poe in the coming weeks. I would not roster him unless I play in a DT-required format.

Mychal Kendricks has 18 total tackles through the first two game of the season. That’s a solid average of nine tackles per game. However, he’s quickly turning into 2013’s version of Rey Maualuga, as he is currently grading out as PFF’s worst inside linebacker this season. Monitor his play going forward if you own him. It’s unlikely the Eagles replace him, but you have to be concerned with how bad he’s looked so far. Fletcher Cox has not looked bad. In fact, he’s arguably one of the most underrated defensive ends in the league from a fantasy standpoint. If he’s somehow still available in your league, Cox needs to be owned. He’s a borderline DL2 for the rest of the season.
