Last season’s champs get a tough Week 1 draw against Peyton Manning and the high-powered Broncos offense. Expect an up-tempo approach from Denver with tons of mismatches in coverage. The Ravens will have to be on their toes here. Denver was a middle of the road matchup for linebackers last season, but I’d still be comfortable with Daryl Smith as a borderline LB2. We still lack clarity at the other inside linebacker position, so Josh Bynes and Arthur Brown are not viable options. I suspect it will be Brown’s job before long. Denver was one of the best matchups for opposing defensive backs last season. Lardarius Webb is in your starting lineup in CB-required leagues, but the Ravens’ safety situation is a bit murky. Michael Huff is a worth a flier in deeper leagues, but it’s best to avoid James Ihedigbo and rookie Matt Elam for now. Their situation is very similar to that of Bynes and Brown.
Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last several months, you know that Von Miller is suspended for six games and Elvis Dumervil is now a Raven. The Denver pass rush gets a significant downgrade as a result. Derek Wolfe is currently your best pass rushing option in Denver, but I don’t particularly like him against a Baltimore team that gave up just 14 sacks to opposing defensive ends last season. The Ravens were a much better matchup for linebackers. Wesley Woodyard is a low-end LB1 this week. The Ravens gave up the third least fantasy points to opposing safeties on a per game basis last season, so I’m avoiding the Denver secondary here.
