Texans: Inconsistent Hoyer moves to new QB battle

PFF-headlinesFor a time during the 2014 season it looked like Brian Hoyer might take the Cleveland Browns’ starting job and run with it, but a disastrous run of form after the Browns’ Week 10 win saw him benched and he hit free agency without the fanfare that had been predicted at the start of the season. Moving on to pastures new, Hoyer has joined the quarterback competition in Houston with Ryan Mallett under head coach Bill O’Brien.

At times Hoyer looked very good for the Browns in both 2013 and 2014, impressing with two productive displays before a season-ending knee injury in 2013 and starting the 2014 season with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 7:1 through the first six weeks of the season. However, things took a sharp downturn from Week 11 throwing eight interceptions in four weeks and losing his starting job to Jonny Manziel for the Week 15 rematch with the Bengals. During that four-week spell, Hoyer earned a PFF passing grade of -19.2 which was comfortably the league's worst in that time.

Without a clear No. 1 quarterback, the battle for the starting job in Houston figures to be an intriguing one throughout mini-camps and training camp itself. Hoyer has proven that he can be both a solid starter and a dreadful starter within the space of the same season. Having beaten out Johnny Manziel in Cleveland last season he will be confident he can make this job his own in Houston, but the question is whether he can re-discover and maintain his early-season form from 2014, or whether he is destined to be at best an inconsistent starter.
