ReFo: Redskins @ Giants, Week 15

2014-REFO-WK15-WAS@NYGWith both teams out of the playoff hunt, this divisional matchup was more about pride and looking to the future. The Giants came out with the win, though at this point every win means the team hurts its draft position.

Washington got another chance to evaluate its quarterback situation with Robert Griffin III getting perhaps his final oppotunity after Colt McCoy went down after just one drive. New York, on the other hand, got another glimpse at a star in Odell Beckham Jr. who looks like he’ll be terrorizing the league’s DBs for years to come.

Let’s take a look at those and some of the other standouts.

Washington Redskins – Performances of Note

Robert Griffin, III, QB: -4.2

Breakdown: We saw glimpses of the 2012 version of Griffin; he was sharp throwing the ball in leading the team on a 77-yard second-quarter TD drive, and looked as dangerous as ever running the ball, such as on his 23-yard run at 12:41 of the third. Ultimately, they were just glimpses, though, as Griffin too often failed to get rid of the ball (taking seven sacks) or couldn’t hold onto it (fumbling three times).

Signature Play: The play with eight seconds remaining in the first half epitomized Griffin’s career and Washington’s season. Griffin showed off impressive speed in getting to the edge and to the pylon on a scramble and looked to have given Washington a 17-7 lead going into the half, only for replay to determine that he had lost control of the ball before he crossed the goal line and fumbled through the end zone for a touchback.

Bashaud Breeland, CB: -3.5

Breakdown: Rough day for the rookie, who had to deal with Odell Beckham Jr. in coverage for much of the game, but also had problems of his own. His five penalties outweighed several pass break-ups.

Signature Play: Things went from bad to worse for Breeland at 8:19 of the second quarter, as he allowed a first-down reception on top of being flagged for defensive holding, which was followed by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the play.

Perry Riley, LB: +2.7

Breakdown: The Giants' run game never really got going in some part due to the play of Riley. The linebacker made five run stops on the day, along with two pass break-ups in coverage.

Signature Play: Good hit at 6:23 of the fourth, jarring the ball loose from the hands of Andre Williams to force the incompletion.

New York Giants – Performances of Note

Odell Beckham Jr., WR: +3.9

Breakdown: Though he has just average size, Beckham is one of those receivers that always seem to be open, even when covered. His touchdown catch at 1:45 of the first is a good example, as he high-pointed and brought in the pass despite the best efforts of E.J. Biggers.  When he wasn’t catching passes, Beckham was still creating havoc for the Washington secondary, forcing three defensive penalties on the day.

Signature Stat: Beckham’s drop rate of 2.78% is the fifth-best mark among 44 receivers who've seen at least 80 targets.

Larry Donnell, TE: -2.6

Breakdown: Donnell did little in the passing game with just two catches for 11 yards in 31 routes run. He was a liability in the run game, however, beaten for a tackle-for-loss and tackle-for-no-gain in just five snaps run blocking.

Signature Play: Trent Murphy got inside of his block at 13:32 of the second quarter to bring down the runner at the LOS.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB: +2.7

Breakdown: DRC was targeted six times, allowing just two catches for eight yards. Among the four balls thrown his way that ended up incomplete, Rodgers-Cromartie got his hands on one for a pass-defense and stifled another with close coverage.

Signature Stat: Rodgers-Cromartie is tied ninth among all DBs with eight pass defenses on the season.

PFF Game Ball

Odell Beckham Jr. continues to build his case for offensive rookie of the year, despite missing the team’s first four games.
