The San Diego Chargers fell to 5-4 yesterday after being manhandled by the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins outgained the Chargers 441-178, and won the turnover battle 4-0 in a game that was completely one-sided.
After a great start, the Chargers limp into their bye week after losing three games in a row, while Miami has now won its last three contests.
San Diego Chargers – Performances of Note
Philip Rivers, QB: -4.1
Breakdown: Rivers’ -4.1 grade is his worst of the season, and it comes after seven consecutive green-graded games. He struggled with decision making yesterday, forcing throws into coverage that resulted in three interceptions. Rivers was blitzed eight times, but was pressured on 11 of his 27 drop-backs.
Signature Play: Rivers earned a QB Rating of 11.5 and a PFF grade of -3.4 when pressured.
Kendall Reyes, DE: -4.3
Breakdown: Reyes’ -4.3 overall grade was a game-worst, and he finished with negative marks in every area: pass rushing, run defense, pass coverage and even added an offsides penalty. He missed his only tackle attempt as he finished with a negative grade for the sixth consecutive week.
Signature Stat: Reyes managed just one hurry on 25 pass rushes.
Shareece Wright, CB: +2.8
Breakdown: Wright was one of two Chargers to play every defensive snap, and his +2.8 grade led the defense. He was the only real bright spot for San Diego on a day where nothing seemed to go their way.
Signature Stat: Wright did a nice job on Mike Wallace, as Tannehill was just 1-4 for 5 yards when Wallace was covered by Wright.
Miami Dolphins – Performances of Note
Ryan Tannehill, QB: +3.6
Breakdown: Tannehill was able to do just about whatever he wanted when the Chargers were unable to pressure him. On his 23 unpressured dropbacks, Tannehill earned a PFF grade of +3.6 and a QB rating of 131.1. The converted wide receiver also showcased his athleticism, keeping the ball on several option runs and gaining 47 rushing yards on just four attempts.
Signature Play: At 11:11 of the third quarter, Tannehill scrambled to his left, giving Rishard Matthews time to get open before hitting him for a touchdown that gave the Dolphins a 27-0 lead.
Reshad Jones, FS: +3.4
Breakdown: This was Jones’ best game of the season, receiving positive marks in both run defense and pass coverage. After missing time early in the year with a suspension, Jones has now earned green grades in his last three games. Of his five tackles, four were stops.
Signature Play: Jones was the recipient of Rivers’ first interception at 11:08 in the second quarter. Already down 14-0, Rivers forced the ball into triple coverage where Jones made the easy interception.
Olivier Vernon, DE: +3.5
Breakdown: Often overlooked on a talented defensive line, Vernon is quietly having a strong year in Miami. This was Vernon’s sixth green-graded game of the year, as he turned 23 pass rushes into 2 sacks and a hurry.
Signature Play: With 0:56 left in the third quarter, Vernon and Cameron Wake each beat their blocker to the outside before converging on Kellen Clemens for a sack.
