ReFo: Browns @ Jaguars, Week 7

2014-REFO-WK07-CLE@JAXThe 3-2 Browns traveled to Jacksonville to face the winless Jaguars in what turned out to be an ugly, mistake-laden game at times. Both offenses struggled to sustain drives throughout and the difference came down to who would capitalize on the other team’s mistakes. It was a close contest for most of the afternoon, but a muffed punt by Cleveland midway through the fourth quarter gave the Jaguars an easy opportunity to extend their lead and helped seal their first win of the season.

Here are a few players that stood out for each team.

Cleveland Browns — Performances of Note

Karlos Dansby and Chris Kirksey, ILBs: +4.3 and +2.0

Breakdown: The inside linebacker duo accounted for 10 of the Browns’ 27 defensive stops and both players graded positively in all three defensive aspects. Dansby has earned a +10.0 overall grade over the last three weeks and currently sits as our top-graded inside linebacker on the season (+9.7). Kirksey has room for improvement, but his performance is an encouraging sign for the rookie.

Signature Stat:  Kirksey had a 26.7% Run Stop Percentage, the fifth-highest game among all inside linebackers this season (min. four run stops).

Brian Hoyer, QB: -3.1

Breakdown: Sunday was a rough outing for Hoyer, who earned his lowest grade as a starter. When under pressure, Hoyer completed just two of 10 passes for 14 yards and was sacked three times. He was often off-target and missed open receivers on multiple occasions, such as his overthrow to Jordan Cameron in the end zone during the second quarter. Hoyer is not entirely to blame for the team’s poor passing performance, though, as his receivers dropped four of his passes. But even when accounting for drops, batted passes, and throwaways, Hoyer still had an Accuracy Percentage of just 58.8% on his aimed throws.

Signature Stat: Hoyer’s 67.3% Accuracy Percentage on the season ranks last among the 27 quarterbacks who have taken at least half of their team’s drop backs.

Paul McQuistan, RG: -4.2

Breakdown:  With Alex Mack out, McQuistan has taken over at right guard while John Greco has slid over to center, and the offensive line looked completely different from the group that ranked as our top offensive line through Week 5. With a little more than a game and a half under his belt, McQuistan has consistently struggled and looked outmatched regardless of whom he is up against. He already ranks in the bottom 15 guards despite playing less than half as many snaps as most of those below him.

Signature Play: McQuistan is beaten by Abry Jones almost immediately after the snap for a QB hit that helps force an interception due to the off-target throw by Hoyer.

Jacksonville Jaguars — Performances of Note

Telvin Smith, OLB: +5.6

Breakdown: Sunday was a breakout performance for the fifth-round rookie. In addition to his interception and pass defense, his only completion allowed on four targets went for a 2-yard loss. He earned positive grades on two of his three pass rushes, including a sack-forced fumble early in the second half that led to a field goal.

Signature Play: With 12:20 left in the third quarter, Smith uses his speed on an edge pass rush and Ben Tate is unable to adjust quick enough to prevent the sack.

Denard Robinson, HB: -0.4

Breakdown: Robinson had easily the most productive game of his career, as well as the most productive by a Jaguars running back this season. While he only forced one missed tackle, he was able avoid head-on hits to pick up extra yardage after contact on several occasions. Robinson showed he could effectively handle a full workload and certainly performed well enough to earn a bigger role in the offense going forward.

Signature Stat: Robinson gained 93 of his 127 rushing yards on 16 carries between the tackles.

Sen’Derrick Marks, DT: +4.4

Breakdown:  After a slow start to the year, Marks has stepped up his game of late, earning a +11.3 overall grade over the last four games. He made a couple good plays against the run, including a tackle for a 4-yard loss in the fourth quarter. As a pass rusher, he was able to pressure the quarterback on four occasions, knocking Hoyer to the ground twice.

Signature Play: With 12:39 remaining in the second quarter, Marks ends Cleveland’s drive by batting down Hoyer’s pass on third down.

PFF Game Ball

A dropped interception away from forcing three turnovers, Telvin Smith has as big of an impact as anyone to earn this week’s game ball.
