The defending AFC Champion Denver Broncos headed to New York to take on a Jets team that was blown out in San Diego a week ago, surely it could only end one way?
Well, the result may have been expected, but the Jets made the Broncos work hard for their win, the victory only secured when Aqib Talib picked off an errant Geno Smith pass and raced back for a touchdown. It won't make the Jets feel much better about the loss, but they had a good showing against the Broncos, with Smith looking much more composed with the exception of that throw late in the fourth quarter.
Let’s take a look at some of the most noteworthy performances:
Denver Broncos – Performances of Note
Von Miller, LB: +5.2
Breakdown: A third game on the bounce where Miller has graded at +5.2 or higher, it was once again his skills as a pass rusher that made things difficult for the Jets' offense. Two sacks, a hit, and two hurries were impressive enough, but he also came away with a batted pass and beat opposing linemen numerous times.
Signature Play: With 56 seconds left in the game, Miller picked up the previously-mentioned batted pass. Beating right guard Willie Colon inside, he got across the face of Geno Smith before knocking the ball down.
Bradley Roby, CB: +2.5
Breakdown: A very calm and composed performance from the rookie cornerback, allowing just seven yards through the air. The Jets went after him four times but saw just one reception into his coverage while he came away with a pass breakup. The best performance we've seen in his young career so far.
Signature Play: On 3rd-and-5 with 52 seconds left in the third quarter he matched tight end Jace Amaro well on a slant route, getting his arm in the way to break it up and force the Jets to punt again.
Manuel Ramirez, C: -5.9
Breakdown: For all the good in the Broncos performance, Ramirez struggled in the middle of the offensive line. His lowest-graded game since entering the league in 2007, he struggled as a run blocker in particular, with the trio of Damon Harrison, Muhammad Wilkerson, and Kenrick Ellis giving him trouble all game long.
Signature Play: On 2nd-and-8 with 4:23 left in the game he was driven back into the backfield by Harrison, who then shed the block with ease before making the tackle.
New York Jets – Performances of Note
Jason Babin, Edge Rusher: +3.9
Breakdown: Seeing the most action he's had all year, Babin played standing up and with his hand in the ground, and he looked good doing so. A menace both against the run and as a pass rusher, he was the star of the show for a talented Jets front seven, possibly earning himself more opportunities in the future.
Signature Play: On 1st-and-10 with 8:50 left in the first half, he beat left tackle Ryan Clady to the inside and hit Peyton Manning.
D'Brickashaw Ferguson, LT: -3.6 and Breno Giacomini, RT: -3.1
Breakdown: Not the sort of game you want from your offensive tackles, but not the first time either have struggled this season. Ferguson gave up a sack, a hit, and four hurries in pass protection, with another hit and hurry coming against Giacomini. Giacomini was also beaten three times where the defender wasn't quite able to get pressure, but still left him behind at the line of scrimmage.
Signature Stat: With all that pressure allowed, Ferguson currently has the eighth-lowest Pass Blocking Efficiency Rating among all offensive tackles in Week 6, at 90.1.
Dawan Landry, FS: +2.4
Breakdown: Things didn't go as planned for the Jets but Landry was another defensive player who had a solid performance with his work against the run, in particular, standing out. He finished the game with four tackles which resulted in a defensive stop and is currently our second-highest-graded safety against the run in Week 6.
Signature Stat: Made a tackle resulting in a defensive stop on 12.1% of the snaps against the run he saw on the field.
PFF Game Ball
He made plays all day long, including that batted pass near the end, and made life miserable for the right side of the Jets' offensive line. Von Miller takes home the PFF Game Ball.
