Punter Rankings - Week 9
The punting carousel in Pittsburgh continues. After dropping Drew Butler in favor of Zoltan Mesko right before the season began (just after he was cut by the New England Patriots in favor of Ryan Allen), the Steelers have again decided to cut bait on a punter. Enter Mat McBriar, former punter for the Dallas Cowboys, who should provide some consistency and stability after two failed experiments with younger, bigger-legged options. McBriar was the starter in Dallas from mid-2008 through late-2011, and his performances in 2009 (+17.5, fourth overall) and 2010 (+15.7, third overall) suggest that he’s got the ability to represent a huge improvement for Mike Tomlin’s club. However, there is good reason to wonder whether the 2012 version of McBriar (+7.8, 27th overall) is more representative of what they’ll be getting moving forward; clearly the expectation here is that McBriar will rebound to close to top form.
