Punter Rankings - Week 2
Quantity and quality are the key to high-level success for punters (from a fantasy perspective) and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Bryan Anger put on quite a show on Sunday in the Jags’ 28-2 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Anger launched 11 punts into the stratosphere, for a total of 556 yards and an impressive 50.3 yards. The Jaguars probably should’ve waited another round or two before picking up Anger in the 2012 Draft, but at least it’s looking as though they acquired a true difference-maker with that third round pick.
This week, Anger goes up against the Raiders’ Marquette King, in a game that’s quite difficult to project. Neither team is particularly fearsome on either side of the ball, and how the defenses hold up will determine whether it’s a fantasy goldmine or a wasteland. King only punted twice in the Raiders’ loss to the Colts last weekend, and the most likely scenario for this week is that each punter will kick 6-7 times, setting them up for top-10 performances.
Another interesting punting match-up to watch for takes place on Sunday night, when top-tier veterans Andy Lee (San Francisco 49ers) and Jon Ryan (Seattle Seahawks) square off. The Seahawks’ offense sputtered against the Carolina Panthers last week, and things won’t get any easier against the 49ers on Sunday night, though it certainly will help the Seahawks that they’ll be playing in front of the cacophonous “12th Man.” But on the other side of the ball, the 49ers’ offense was devastating against the Packers, and this week they will be going against a somewhat weakened Seahawks defense. Brandon Browner is questionable, Bruce Irvin is suspended, and linemen Chris Clemons, Cliff Avril and Brandon Mebane are all nursing injuries. For this reason, Ryan gets a bump up (and Lee a bump down) in this week’s rankings.
