The Bills shouldn't consider drafting a QB in the first round

There are many different routes the Bills could explore with the 10th overall pick come Thursday night; one position that has been often tied to that pick — including from PFF's own Steve Palazzolo in his most recent mock draft — is quarterback. Nobody truly knows whether or not Buffalo is going to select a quarterback in the first round but based on the play of Tyrod Taylor over the past two seasons, along with Buffalo having glaring needs at a few other positions, they shouldn't:

  • Taylor has ranked second among quarterbacks in each of the past two seasons with a 91.4 run grade in 2015 and an 87.3 run grade in 2016.
  • Taylor’s 80.1 QB Rating while under pressure last season was the 7th best among 37 qualified QBs; and his 87.6 QB Rating while under pressure in 2015 ranked 5th.
  • Sammy Watkins was marred by injuries in 2016, but when he was healthy in 2015 him and Tyrod showed that they were one of the more lethal QB-WR connections in football: Watkins’ 128.8 WR Rating that season ranked 3rd among 85 qualified receivers. Getting a healthy Watkins back plus drafting a top receiver could go a long way in Taylor taking a step forward in 2017.
  • By selecting a quarterback 10th overall, Buffalo could pass up on prospects that would fill majors needs on their roster such as safeties Jamal Adams (sixth in PFF top 300 draft board) and Malik Hooker (eighth) or receivers and Corey Davis (seventh) or Mike Williams (11th).
