  • Paxton Lynch has taken a step up the Denver Broncos depth chart, and will serve as Brock Osweiler’s backup on Sunday, according to Troy E. Renck of Denver 7 ABC. Lynch will be active for the first time of the season as he moves ahead of former starter Trevor Siemian.
  • Lynch was selected by the Broncos in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft, after a mightily impressive final year at the University of Memphis, where he finished in the top five among quarterbacks in three key facets of a quarterback’s game. In 13 games for the Tigers, his adjusted completion percentage (the PFF metric that gives a clear measure of accuracy) of 79.2 percent was good for third among signal-callers with 265-plus attempts, while his 128.1 passer rating on throws of 20 or more yards and his passer rating of 104.4 on throws under pressure ranked second and third among quarterbacks respectively.
  • However, in his two years as a pro, Lynch is yet live up to his college numbers. In 2016, Lynch played 177 regular season snaps, and mostly struggled, posting an adjusted completion percentage of just 65.8 percent, while tallying a 9.8 passer rating on deep throws and a 27.1 passer rating on throws under pressure.
  • Since taking over the starting job in Week 9, starter Brock Osweiler has failed to provide a significant upgrade to Trevor Siemian, and has accumulated a ‘poor’ PFF overall grade of just 43.7 over the last two games. With the season in the balance, the team will likely not hesitate to give Lynch a look down the stretch to see if they can build around the potential he showed in his final season at the college level.
