Patriots hold strong at No. 1, Broncos to No. 2 in PFF's NFL Week 9 Power Rankings
Week 8 of the NFL season has come and gone, and with it, a new week’s worth of grades are in the Pro Football Focus database.
PFF’s Power Rankings are based off of Senior Analyst Sam Monson’s ordering of all 32 NFL teams, offenses, and defenses. He uses PFF’s overall cumulative grades as a starting point, and makes necessary subjective adjustments to account for things that aren’t captured in the grading system, such as injuries.
The PFF Power Rankings will be updated every Tuesday morning during the NFL season—view the latest edition entering Week 9 here.
Unsurprisingly, the New England Patriots remain at No. 1 in our rankings, owning the third overall offense and fifth overall defense. Since his return, quarterback Tom Brady has been the most-accurate passer in the league, on pace to record the highest adjusted completion percentage over a season in the PFF era (since 2006). Helping Brady to that impressive mark has been Rob Gronkowski, who is once again the league’s highest-graded tight end entering Week 9.
The Patriots’ defense may take a hit with the loss of Jamie Collins via trade yesterday; see Senior Analyst Sam Monson’s breakdown of that move here.
Moving into the No. 2 spot are the Denver Broncos following their Week 8 AFC West victory over the Chargers. Von Miller owns the second-highest grade among NFL edge defenders this season, just behind Philadelphia’s Brandon Graham. Two of the three highest-graded CBs this season are also on the Denver roster, with Aqib Talib (out versus San Diego) and Chris Harris Jr. owning the Nos. 2 and 3 spots behind Houston CB A.J. Bouye.
On the losing side of that matchup, the Chargers take the biggest hit this week in our rankings. Dropping from No. 12 to No. 26, San Diego now sits just ahead of Indianapolis and Tampa Bay. Philip Rivers recorded his worst grade of the season in Week 8, while RT Joe Barksdale had an understandably poor outing against Von Miller.
