NYJ-PHI grades: Eagles QB Daniel struggles, WR Green-Beckham grades well

Philadelphia Eagles 14, New York Jets 6

Here are the top takeaways from the Philadelphia Eagles’ 14-6 preseason Week 4 win over the New York Jets.

Philadelphia Eagles

Quarterback grade: Chase Daniel, 52.4; McLeod Bethel-Thompson, 45.1

Chase Daniel fails to impress in extended playing time

At one point this offseason, Chase Daniel’s contract with the Eagles was a big story. It was quickly overshadowed by Sam Bradford's trade demands, which followed the Eagles trading up to draft Carson Wentz at No. 2 overall. Daniel didn’t stand out much over the preseason, and that was again true against the Jets. Only two of his 14 completions came on passes in the air for 10 yards or more, and he only attempted one pass more than 20 yards in the air.

Top offensive grades:

T Halapoulivaati Vaitai, 81.9

C Josh Andrews, 81.5

T Matt Tobin, 78.4

WR Dorial Green-Beckham, 71.5

WR Paul Turner, 70.0

WR Dorial Green-Beckham continues to gain playing time

Earlier in the week the Eagles released Rueben Randle and Chris Givens, which was a sign that Dorial Green-Beckham is likely to make the roster. In a game that was dominated by defenses, Green-Beckham stood out by catching both passes thrown his way — one for 16 yards on which most of his work came after the catch, and another for 15 yards.

Top defensive grades:

LB Don Cherry, 83.4

DE Steven Means, 83.2

S Ed Reynolds, 82.9

CB C.J. Smith, 82.3

S Blake Countess, 79.9

Steven Means dominates the preseason

While the top four defensive end spots on the Eagles roster seem set, Steven Means continued his case for a roster spot with one sack, one hit, one hurry and one pass defense in 20 pass rushes. He has graded well in each of the four games this preseason. His 14.3 pass-rushing productivity over the entire preseason is third-best for 4-3 defensive ends.

New York Jets

Quarterback grade: Bryce Petty, 68.7; Christian Hackenberg, 31.5

Jets rookie QB Christian Hackenberg doesn’t look ready for NFL action

After Bryce Petty had a respectable albeit short performance, which included a 44-yard touchdown pass, Christian Hackenberg had a night to forget. He completed just one of 12 passes that were in the air for 10 or more yards. When under pressure, he completed just one pass for minus-1 yard, had an interception and was sacked. This may be the last we see of Hackenberg until next preseason, while the Jets attempt to develop him.

Top offensive grades:

T Brett Qvale, 77.0

FB Julian Hosare, 73.0

RB Khiry Robinson, 71.3

WR Robby Anderson, 71.3

G Craig Watts, 69.2

Khiry Robinson performs solidly in his Jets debut

After missing the last few preseason games, Khiry Robinson, who is projected to be the Jets third running back this season, made the most of his limited opportunities. On average he was contacted just 0.8 yards past the line of scrimmage due to the Eagles' defensive line getting the best of the Jets' offensive line. He still managed 2.0 yards after contact per carry, and made an impact in the passing game with a 16-yard catch.

Top defensive grades:

CB Juston Burris, 85.0

LB Taiwan Jones, 83.0

S Doug Middleton, 82.8

CB Darryl Morris, 82.2

NT Deon Simon, 81.7

Fourth-round rookie CB Juston Burris has best game yet

While Juston Burris likely won’t see much playing time on defense with the Jets in Week 1, he took one more step towards seeing significant playing time in the future. He allowed just two of the five passes thrown his way to be caught for just 11 yards versus the Eagles. He also had his first interception of the preseason, as well as a pass defense. Burris and Washington’s Kendall Fuller lead the league this preseason in passes defended at five each.
