NYJ-BUF Grades: Bacarri Rambo seals win for Bills

Here are the top takeaways and highest-graded players from the Bills' 22-17 victory over the Jets:

New York Jets

– This was a rough night for the Jets, with missteps from Ryan Fitzpatrick (-0.3) compounding missteps by his skill position players to hold the Jets short of victory. Drops and receiver errors held Fitzpatrick back from production on some strong throws, while a pair of poor reads resulted in a game-ending interception, and might have resulted in an interception that put the Jets in a hole very early in the game. Passes down the field continue to show the potential of this Jets’ offense, but the miscues must be cut out if they are to rescue the momentum they rode into New England with only a few weeks ago.

– For the second time in three weeks, the Jets missed more than 15 tackles, having not hit double figures since Todd Bowles took over at the start of the season. The only defensive starter not to miss a tackle was Darrelle Revis, while the worst offender was Marcus Williams (-3.8), who started opposite Revis this week. His four missed tackles were, alarmingly, not a season-high after he missed six in his only other start against the Raiders two weeks ago. On the season, Williams has missed almost as many tackles as he has made (11 missed tackles, 16 total tackles).

– There was more production from Chris Ivory (-2.1) last night, but his performance level from the start of the season still eludes him. Unlike on Sunday when he was given no room to work (-2 yards before contact), Ivory gained 2.3 yards per carry before contact and came up just shy of his first 100-yard game since Week 6. His game, however, was blighted by poor ball-handling, with Bacarri Rambo ripping the football away from him early in the third quarter and a drop later in the third quarter. If Ivory can repeat his performance carrying the ball and erase the ball-handling errors, his season will be back on the rise.

LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson (+2.3)
LG James Carpenter (+2.0)

ILB David Harris (+1.9)

Buffalo Bills

– This entire game was turned by the big plays of Bacarri Rambo, both on defense (+3.1) and special teams (+1.5). The Bills won this game not as a result of points off turnovers, but as a result of points off Rambo. Registering 17 defensive snaps (his first time hitting double figures since the Week 4 defeat to the Giants), Rambo forced three turnovers on the night, taking fumbles from Chris Ivory (-2.1) and Devin Smith, which led directly to nine Buffalo points, and his interception at the end of the game sealed the win. This was the best performance of Rambo’s career, and a deciding factor in the Bills' victory.

– Back-t- back 112-yard games and a season-high eight missed tackles forced could prove to be the launching point for LeSean McCoy’s (+2.2) career as a Buffalo Bill. By a combination of blocking, catching the Jets in bad plays, and McCoy’s exceptional cutting and acceleration, he consistently found space as a ball carrier, gaining 57 of his 112 rushing yards before first contact. Four of McCoy’s six missed tackles came on a spectacular third down conversion immediately after the 2-minute warning in the first half, evading three defensive linemen and Buster Skrine on a 4-yard gain to help set up the Bills’ field goal to end the half.

– Entering this week as the leader in our race for the Rookie of the Year, Ronald Darby (+2.2) proved his mettle in front of a national television audience, with his seventh positively graded performance in coverage this season. Targeted five times, Darby surrendered only a solitary completion, which went for a loss of yards. Darby got his hands to a pass in the seventh of nine games this season, taking his season total to 11 pass defenses, which places him behind only fellow rookie Marcus Peters for the league lead.
