NYG-LA grades: Giants defense bails out Eli Manning in win

LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 23: Todd Gurley #30 of the Los Angeles Rams tackles Landon Collins #21 of the New York Giants during the NFL International series game between Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants at Twickenham Stadium on October 23, 2016 in London, England. New York Giants 17, Los Angeles Rams 10

Here are the top takeaways and highest-graded players for New York's 17-10 win over Los Angeles:

New York Giants

Quarterback grade: Eli Manning, 42.6

Manning out of synch all game

To say this Eli Manning was not at his best would be something of an understatement. He struggled all game long and but for a big effort from his defense, the result would have been very different. He completed just three passes longer than 10 yards all game and can consider himself fortunate that on what would be the game winning drive, he had a dropped interception, and the big gainer that set themselves up came on an underthrown pass by him.

Top offensive grades:

WR Odell Beckham, 76.4

C Weston Richburg, 75.2

TE Will Tye, 72.0

LT Ereck Flowers, 70.0

WR Sterling Shepard, 65.8

Playmakers don't make their mark versus Rams

Not exactly grades to excite. The Giants best form of offense may have actually been ensuring that punter Brad Wing got his hands on the ball as his kicking really gave their defense something to work with. The line struggled inside, not sure whether to double team Aaron Donald or run trap plays on him. Neither plan worked, with Donald either wrecking plays or free defenders wrapping up for short gains.

Top defensive grades:

CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, 87.8

LB Keenan Robinson, 87.3

DT Damon Harrison, 84.9

CB Janoris Jenkins, 83.6

S Landon Collins, 81.0

Secondary leads excellent defensive performance

As bad as the offense was, the defense was just as good. Led by a dominant defensive backfield performance, they made plays on the ball all game long. The Giants ended the day with four picks and five more pass breakups, and outside of one early big play given up by Janoris Jenkins, they kept the Rams passing attack to under six yards per attempt.

Los Angeles Rams

Quarterback grades: Case Keenum, 44.0

Keenum struggles as things don't go his way

Sometimes you get unlucky with interceptions, and sometimes you don’t. On Sunday, Case Keenum was unlucky, as his three INTs stemmed from a miscommunication, a pass deflection and a dropped pass. Still, he was plenty inaccurate the rest of the game, and if he continues to play like this, we’ll be reading a lot more about fans wanting to see No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff.

Top offensive grades:

LG Rodger Saffold, 80.9

TE Lance Kendrick, 76.9

RG Cody Wichmann, 72.2

WR Brian Quick, 72.1

WR Tavon Austin, 72.1

Offense unable to create opportunities for Gurley

This offensive line continues to make life hard for feature back Todd Gurley. Primed to be the jewel of the Rams' offense, their inability to open up lanes limited him to just 15 touches and 3.8 yards per attempt. Gurley himself needs to do more, as the season doesn’t get any easier, and this passing attack is not good enough to drop back 57 times in a game.

Top defensive grades:

LB Mark Barron, 88.5

DT Aaron Donald, 86.7

CB Lamarcus Joyner, 85.9

CB Troy Hill, 83.0

DE Ethan Westbrooks, 81.3

Defense plays well in defeat

Not many teams are going to beat the Rams on the line of scrimmage, and the Giants commitment to slowing down their front four meant Barron and Alec Ogletree could engage in attack mode as they finished the day with nine combined stops (the team had 20). In the secondary they were all over the Giants short passing attack, with Troy Hill (four defensive stops) particularly impressive blowing up a number of screen plays.
