  • Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reported that the Chiefs signed former 49ers outside linebacker Marcus Rush on Tuesday. The move comes after Kansas City released former Chargers edge rusher Tourek Williams Friday after just a week with the team.
  • Rush had a productive final year in college, tallying 48 pressures (including 10 sacks) for Michigan State in 2014, which ranked 12th among all 4-3 defensive ends in Power-5 conferences.
  • The former Spartan posted an overall grade of 82.1 in 2014, ranking 37th in the nation among 374 qualifying edge defenders. His pass-rush grade of 82.8 ranked 29th in the nation.
  • Rush was signed as an undrafted free agent by the 49ers following the 2015 NFL draft and showed flashes in the preseason, playing mostly at outside linebacker in San Francisco’s 3-4 scheme. He lined up for 112 snaps across four games in the 2015 preseason, posting a healthy pass-rush productivity score of 12.1, as well as solid game grades of 72.4, 74.2, 75.4, and 75.8.
  • Rush took another step forward the following year, as he was one of the most dominant edge rushers in the 2016 preseason, racking up a league high six sacks in his four games. The most impressive of those games came in Denver, where he produced a grade of 89.8.
  • Rush will be hoping for a repeat performance in 2017 in order to make his mark amongst a deep outside linebacker group. His main competition will come from Dadi Nicolas and Frank Zombo (two of the five OLBs the Chiefs carried on the roster last season) who posted grades of 70.8 and 44.3, respectively, in 2016.
