- Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph informed his players Wednesday that starting quarterback Trevor Siemian would be benched and backup Brock Osweiler would start against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 9.
- After a somewhat promising start to the season which saw the Broncos achieve a 3-1 record, Siemian’s play quickly deteriorated. After the first four weeks of the season, Siemian had a PFF grade of 73.3 which ranked 20th among quarterbacks. However, after his teams Week 8 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, his season grade had dropped to 52.4, ranking 32nd out of 34 qualifying quarterbacks.
- The primary reason for Siemian’s decline in play has been an inability to handle pressure. In his first four starts, Siemian was accurate on 63.3 percent of his passes when under pressure, good for 15th among 32 starting quarterbacks. However, in his last three games (all losses), that number dropped to just 38.1 percent, with Siemian only managing five completions to four interceptions for a passer rating of 0.0. Siemian also took sacks on 12 of the 41 plays on which he was pressured in these three games.
- Siemian will be replaced by Brock Osweiler, who struggled mightily last season as the quarterback of the Houston Texans, ranking 32nd out of 34 signal callers with a grade of just 48.6. However, Osweiler did fare better the previous year back in Denver, earning a grade of 77.7 across eight games whilst playing in relief of Peyton Manning.
