Beathard seizes 49ers QB job from Hoyer

  • The San Francisco 49ers have a new starting quarterback, with Brian Hoyer benched and rookie C.J. Beathard out of Iowa now the man under center. Beathard came in after 18 snaps from Hoyer this week against Washington, and played the final 54 snaps, earning an overall PFF grade of 42.2 for his debut.
  • Beathard completed just 59.3 percent of his passes when under no pressure at all against Washington, though he did flash some nice plays.
  • Beathard played the most snaps of any 49ers quarterback this preseason, and though his passer rating was 107.7, his overall PFF grade was far more average at 68.9, and his passing grade of 55.9 was below average thanks to some poor decisions.
  • His highest college grade at Iowa was just 76.3 and that season he had the 50th-best adjusted completion percentage in the nation. If Beathard is to prove an upgrade in San Francisco, it will be all about untapped potential, not proven game play.
