Bears DI Akiem Hicks is seeking a big raise

  • According to Brad Biggs, standout Chicago Bears interior defender Akiem Hicks is seeking a new contract worth upwards of $10-million per season. Since signing a two-year contract worth $5-million per year with the Bears in 2016, Hicks has performed at a high level and appears due to for a significant raise.
  • Hicks, who has been a solid player throughout his career, had a breakout season in 2016 grading as the 12th best interior defender out of 126 qualifiers with an overall grade of 85.5. Hicks has gotten better each season since 2014 despite changing teams twice.
  • The strong point of Hicks’ play in 2016 was run defense, where he earned a run defense grade of 85.6. His 28 run stops were the second most among 3-4 defensive ends.
  • In 2016, Hicks turned himself into a third-down assassin rushing the passer. His third-down pass-rush productivity of 12.9 was the third highest among interior defenders (min 250 pass rush snaps). He racked up 26 of his 50 total pressures on third down including four sacks.
