2018 NFL rookie rankings through Week 10

Uh oh, guess what day it is? That’s right, it’s hump day! Which means it is time for another weekly update in our season-long race for PFF’s Rookie of the Year award. It’s been a hotly contested race all season long up so far, and it figures to be even tighter down the stretch. 141 rookies have seen at least 100 offensive or defensive snaps this season, and this class looks to be littered with players who should be solid contributors for years to come.

Without further ado, here’s where the top-10 rookies currently stand through 10 weeks, along with the honorable mentions right on their tails.

Chubb’s been left off this list up until now due to sample size, but his usage has been high ever since the Cleveland Browns decided to trade Carlos Hyde to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Chubb hit the 100-touch mark this past weekend, and his play has simply been exceptional. Chubb leads all running backs in terms of overall grade for the season, and he’s been a nightmare for opposing defenses when the ball is in his hands. At PFF, we have a measurement called elusive rating that distills the success and impact of a runner with the ball independently of the blocking in front of him by looking at how hard he was to bring down: Chubb leads all running backs with a 131.9 elusive rating, no other running back is even above 100. Chubb is currently averaging 5.28 yards after contact per attempt (over 1.5 yards more than Royce Freeman or Austin Ekeler, who are tied for second with an average of 3.69 YCO/A). And of the 53 running backs who’ve carried the ball at least 50 times this season, Chubb ranks first with an average of 0.28 forced missed tackles per attempt.

Ward currently ranks tied for 13th among the 120 cornerbacks who’ve seen at least 144 defensive snaps this season in terms of overall grade, and he checks in at 10th among the group with an 81.7 grade in coverage. Along with Jaire Alexander, Ward is also one of the five cornerbacks this season who currently has a playmaker index (PMI measures how often a cornerback either intercepts or breaks up a pass relative to the number of targets into their coverage) of at least 20.0 (Ward ranks 18th among corners with a 20.8 PMI) to go with at least nine stops in coverage this season (Ward has nine), and opposing quarterbacks have earned just a 71.2 passer rating when targeting him in coverage, the 20th-lowest rating allowed by a CB through the first 10 weeks.

McGlinchey is currently ranked 13th among the 84 tackles who’ve seen at least 100 offensive snaps this season in terms of overall grade, and his 82.9 run-blocking grade leads the group. The former Notre Dame star took a handful of games to get acclimated to pass blocking in the NFL. but he’s now surrendered one or fewer pressures in five of his last six games.
