PFF Preview: Titans @ Redskins, Week 7

2014-Prev-WK07-TEN@WASThe Washington Redskins will host the Tennessee Titans this Sunday hoping to snap a four game losing streak. With a win over the Jaguars last week, Tennessee snapped its own four-game losing streak and will look to continue to claw their way back up the NFC South with a winnable game against a Washington club playing with a backup quarterback. It’s not fair to say Kirk Cousins has been their sole problem, though, as Washington has allowed nearly 35 points per game over their last four games.

Cousins will have every opportunity this week against a Titan secondary that has struggled to replace Alterraun Verner. Incumbent starter Jason McCourty (-2.9 coverage) has struggled to replicate his strong play from recent seasons, already surrendering a league-leading 543 yards. Blidi Wreh-Wilson hasn’t helped things with a league-high seven penalties either.

On the other side of the ball, Tennessee has been forced to play Charlie Whitehurst for portions of each of the last three weeks, and while Jake Locker has returned to practice, he may sit for some or all of Sunday’s game. Though Locker is the starter, it’s debatable that he’s played better than Whitehurst this year. Locker’s Accuracy Percentage of 67.6% lands him 34th of 38 quarterbacks, sitting firmly among others who have been benched. The quarterback who can avoid crucial turnovers may just be the one who pulls out the win this weekend.

Tennessee Titans

Delanie Walker – Establishing himself as one of the few balanced tight ends, the former 49er leads all tight ends with both his +6.8 run blocking grade and 421 receiving yards

Taylor Lewan – Getting just his second career start for the injured Michael Roos, Lewan looks to be a more than adequate replacement. He’s allowed just one pressure (a sack) in 51 pass blocking snaps and has a fantastic +4.0 run blocking grade on 40 running plays.

Ropati Pitoitua – After years of roughly average play, the six-foot-eight Pitoitua has stepped up dramatically in 2014. He has ten stops in run defense and the third highest run defense grade (+9.0) of all 3-4 defensive ends.

Washington Redskins

Trent Williams – Having allowed just three hits and three hurries all year, Williams Pass Blocking Efficiency of 98.0 is the third best mark among offensive tackles.

Jason Hatcher – Facing his third different defensive scheme in as many years hasn’t slowed down the 32 year old Hatcher. He’s second at his position with 24 total pressures and a Pass Rushing Productivity of 11.9.

Kirk Cousins – Cousins has posted a 97.5 QB rating and compiled a +7.3 grade when he has time to throw. Under pressure, those numbers drop dramatically to 56.2 and -9.4.
