PFF Preview: Saints @ Lions, Week 7

2014-Prev-WK07-NO@DETThe Detroit Lions (4-2) are coming off a divisional victory on the road, and will get to play at home this week as they host the New Orleans Saints (2-3) who are coming off their bye week.

Drew Brees has continued to be one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the league. His Accuracy Percentage is 78.9%, putting him as the 2nd most accurate passer through six weeks of the season. Brees has been most effective when the opposing defense doesn’t blitz with a rating of +6.6 and a 70.9% completion percentage. In contrast, his rating against the blitz is -0.9 and his completion percentage drops to 60.9%.

The Detroit Lions have successfully got pressure on quarterbacks without blitzing so far this season. Last week against the Vikings, the Lions generated pressure on 24 plays while blitzing on only 14 plays. When they did not blitz Teddy Bridgewater’s rating was -2.3. The highest rating they have allowed to a quarterback in a single game on snaps they did not blitz was +0.4 against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. The Lions blitzed only twice in their matchup with the Packers, which they won.

Detroit Lions

Ndamukong Suh – Suh has been the second-best interior defensive linemen in the league against the run (+8.8) accumulating 13 stops, 11 tackles, four assists, and only one missed tackle.

Glover Quin – Quin has been the second-best safety in the league overall (+8.0) and has excelled in pass coverage (+5.8). Opposing quarterbacks have earned an passer rating of 24.6 when throwing to receivers in his coverage area.

Nick Fairley – The other Lions defensive tackle has been productive in the pass rush with 12 hurries, two hits on the QB, and two sacks. Fairley is coming off his best game of the season overall (+4.7).

New Orleans Saints

Zach Strief – The Saints’ right tackle has missed three of the team’s 376 offensive snaps this year and has been key to protecting Brees allowing one QB hit, and zero sacks.

Parys Haralson – Playing in a rotational role, Haralson has been solid in run defense (+4.6) and produced in the pass rush (+1.3) in the Saints last game against the Buccaneers getting a hit and a hurry on the quarterback.

Khiry Robinson – Since Mark Ingram went down with an injury Khiry has stepped in and ran the ball well netting 304 yards with 164 coming after contact. Khiry has also forced 14 missed tackles on his 61 carries.
