PFF Preview: Rams @ 49ers, Week 9
The (2-5) St. Louis Rams head to Santa Clara, California on Sunday to matchup with the (4-3) San Francisco 49ers. After a big win at home against the Seahawks at home, the Rams were drubbed 34-7 last week in Kansas City. The 49ers lost in Denver to the Broncos in Week 7 and are well rested after a Week 8 bye week. The 49ers won the first meeting with the Rams in week 6, 31-17.
The 49ers have been dealing with a banged up offensive line all season. Daniel Kilgore was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week and looks to be replaced with either rookie free agent Dillon Farrell or fellow rookie Marcus Martin. Whomever starts at center, along with guards Alex Boone (-4.2 grade overall) and Mike Iupati (-4.8 pass blocking and +10.9 run blocking), will have their hands full when dealing with Ram’s rookie defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Donald follows only Gerald McCoy with a +17.3 overall grade and tops all interior linemen with a +11.6 run grade. He ranks in the top ten in Pass Rush Productivity and 2nd in Run Stop Percentage at 12.6%.
Here are a few other players to watch out for.
St. Louis Rams
Joe Barksdale – Barksdale ranks is the 14th ranked tackle overall with a +6.5 grade. His +9.7 run blocking grade is tops among all tackles.
Robert Quinn – While Quinn hasn’t been the overall force he was a year ago, his +8.5 pass rushing grade still ranks 4th and his 10.8 Pass Rush Productivity rating ranks 9th.
Mark Barron – Barron comes into this game with a -4.1 overall grade for the season. We will see what a fresh start in a new defensive scheme can do for his overall play.
San Francisco 49ers
Stevie Johnson – His +7.8 overall grade ranks 5th out of all receivers and his Wide Receiver Rating of 127.8 ranks 6th.
Ian Williams – Williams ranks eighth out of all interior linemen with a run grade of +7.1 and his 13.3% Run Stop Percentage ranks 4th.
Perrish Cox – Cox has a +6.4 overall grade, and he’s currently allowing one reception for every 12.1 coverage snaps he’s on the field. This mark puts him at 14th in our Cornerbacks Coverage significant stat.
