PFF Preview: Bengals @ Patriots, Week 5

2014-Prev-WK05-CIN@NEThe Cincinnati Bengals and their formidable secondary will head into New England to take on their troubling offense. Cincinnati DBs Leon Hall, Reggie Nelson, George Iloka, and Terence Newman all boast green pass coverage grades across three games this year. Despite the Patriots’ offensive issues, Rob Gronkowski remains a constant threat. He has scored three TDs in four games and played 62% of the snaps last week, his highest percentage all year.

Sebastian Vollmer is the other standout for the Pats offense with a +3.0 grade overall and has only given up seven pressures in 148 pass block snaps. Dont'a Hightower has really come into his own this year: he’s tied for third among ILBs with an overall grade of +5.5 and is the best ILB in coverage with a grade of +5.6. He is also tied for second on the Pats in stops with 12 and leads the team in pressures with 12.

The Cincinnati offensive line has been dominant when pass blocking as they have not allowed a sack on the year and have only given up 10 pressures through three games. Bengals’ tackles Andre Smith Jr. and Andrew Whitworth have stood out combining to give up only one hit and three hurries with Smith being the No. 1 tackle in Pass Blocking Efficiency.

Here are three more notable numbers for each side:

Cincinnati Bengals

Emmanuel Lamur – Currently leading 4-3 OLBs with at least 100 snaps in pass coverage with a +2.8 grade.

Giovani Bernard – Tied for fifth with Roy Helu in Yards per Pass Route Run with 2.79 among RBs with at least seven targets.

Jermaine Gresham – Has yet to allow a pressure in 19 pass block snaps along with a +2.0 run block grade.

New England Patriots

Darelle Revis – Ranked 12th in coverage among CBs with 130 snaps. He has one INT and a QB Rating of 75.1 when thrown at.

Brandon Browner – Off of suspension, Browner will play his first game of the year this week. He ranked as the 13th-best CB in coverage last year among those with at least 250 snaps at a rate of 12.8 Cover Snaps per Reception.

Matt Slater – Has a +1.4 overall grade and leads the team with six tackles on special teams.
